ARAHABAKIから Zoe-Morris（モリス・ゾイ）さんへ5つの質問。

1. 陶芸を始めるきっかけについて教えてください。
（How did you come to start Pottery ?）

早くから絵を描いたり、ものを創ったりすることが好きでしたが、訳けあってその道に進むことができず、大学では文学を専攻しましたが、
在学中は多くの美術、芸術に触れることを好み、
また学生生活から卒業後も携わった発掘活動にて古代歴史の断片を整理する傍ら触れた陶器の欠片に、過去への思いを巡らせたことが印象として残っています。

その後しばらくして日本に来て新たな芸術に出会う中、日本を代表する備前、信楽、伊賀など薪窯による陶芸に興味を持つようになり、
週に一度陶芸教室に通うことになりました。

実際に作品を作り始めると、釉薬と造形表現に興味が移り、本格的に陶芸を学ぶため愛知県立瀬戸窯業高等学校専攻科陶芸科に進学致しました。
以来、私自身を表現できる最も適した素材として磁器に魅せられたように思います。

I have always liked drawing or making things and thought about going to Art University when I was in school.
I ended up majoring in English studies at University but continued to be interested in Art.
And having the chance to work with pottery when I worked on an archaeological dig as a finds processor during the summers at university, also left a strong impression.

After coming to Japan and encountering a new world of art, I was particularly interested in pottery - especially the traditionalwoodfired kilns of Bizen, Iga and Shigaraki.
I decided to try pottery for myself and joined a once a week pottery class.

But after actually starting to make pottery, I became more and more interested in form and glaze realizing the only way to learn properly was to study full time.
I was lucky enough to be able to go to a 2 year college in Seto.
Since then I have enjoyed working in porcelain as I feel it allows me to express myself best.

2. 作品を作り出すときに一番大切にしていることは何ですか。
（What is the most important thing for you when you are making something ?）

作陶に集中できるよう愛犬ディランをクタクタになるほど遊ばせること。
形にこだわること。

Firstly, I want to make sure that my dog is tired enough so that he doesn’t disturb me during my working day !
But seriously, I want to pour my energy into getting the right shape.
I would also love for each piece to have a life of its own but that is an ideal.

3. 作風に影響を受けたアーティストがいれば教えてください。
（Is there anyone in particular who has influenced your work ?）

特に誰かの影響を受けたと感じたり、考えたりすることはなく、
これまでの生活で経験したことが複雑に織り交ざっているので「これ」と断定できるものはありません。

This is a difficult question. I don’t think there is one person.
There are many – in fact everything and everyone has had some influence and it is very difficult to pull apart the threads.
And I don’t like to think about it or analyze it too much.

4. 長く大切に使ってもらう為に。初めて使う時の注意点やお手入れの仕方について教えてください
（Is there anything we should know about how to use your pieces ?）。

マット釉がベースになっているので透明釉にくらべ汚れやすいです。見た感じ、染みてきた感じがする場合は台所用漂白剤で染み抜きをして下さい。
（クレンザーなどでこすらないで下さい）

Nothing in particular. But my glaze is a kind of matt glaze so it may become stained more quickly than a clear glaze.
If you feel it is “dirty looking”, use a kitchen bleach. It is better not to use scouring pads or harsh cleansers.

5. 最後に。今まで旅した中で最も印象に残る場所はどこですか？その訳も教えてください。
（Finally, during your travels, what is the place that has left a lasting impression upon you ?）

幸運にもこれまで様々な国々で生活することができ、
それぞれの経験はとてもユニークで比較が出来ませんが、
大雪山国立公園をキャンプしながら縦断した時の感動は高い山が無い国から来た人にとって最高でした。

I have been lucky enough to live and work in a number of countries / places.
Each has been unique and special so it is very hard to choose “one”.
If I talk about Japan, one of the best places I have visited was Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido.
We spent about a week hiking and camping from one side to the other.
We don’t have those kinds of mountains in the UK so it was an “awesome” trip.
